It is certainly not bit errors, the PHY layer (compromising the transmitting PHY, the receptacle, the cable, the cable quality, the receiving receptacle, and the receiving PHY) has a specified bit error rate of 1 x 10**12, which equates to one error every 8 days at Redbook rates. As an asynchronous transfer, the data are buffered at the input of the DAC, whose clock manages the timing and jitter as it ingests the bitstream. If there are timing errors in the conversion, there may be potentially audio impacts, but the cable has absolutely nothing to do with it, as the same (correct) bits that went into the cable are all just lined up waiting their turn at the input of the converter.

Enlighten me please!
