Please install MinimServer to unlock all browsing features of Lumin app. It can run on Windows, Mac OS, or Synology/QNAP NAS. This way you can stream music from MinimServer to Lumin, without needing to use an external USB HDD - this saves you from potential hassles brought by the USB HDD going to sleep, and this is the recommended way to use a network player anyway.

You might try converting to flac using 0% compression first. If this conversion passes the "bits are bits" test you could then re-convert using compression at whatever level you prefer.

I read about this option somewhere, perhaps on the dBPoweramp webpage itself. My only concern is the potential sonic harm that a file conversion of this scale might engender. I know in theory that all of those one and zeros are (or should be) convertible to multiple formats, but I remain a bit skeptical. Perhaps I'll try converting a few wma files to flac versions and compare the differences.

TweekGeek: Thank you for the kind words. You are soooo right about the need for competent dealer support in this new universe. As I tried to convey in my review, I had (and still have) a lot of learning to do to get up to speed with the nuances of computer and music server audio. I treat every review I write as a learning exercise, but the learning curve with the Lumin was steeper than I expected. Its a lot like being a student again. You may be interested to learn that I plan to test the Lumin with a number of outboard DACs over the next six to eight months. Additionally, the kind folks at Source Systems, Ltd. have promised me a review sample of the new Lumin U1 (server sans DAC) when it becomes available stateside. Please look for my updates.

That's a very important point, TweekGeekAudio. I concur completely on the need for an IT-savvy audio dealer for computer-based musical systems like these.

The Lumin's ease of setup, use and great sound for the money is perfect for those wishing to dip their toes in the waters of computer based audio. Be advised however, computer audio requires a a dealer who is well versed in networking and streaming technology. Choose wisely.
