In reply to Bruce in PA. No update that fixes the gapless playback situation. They did issue a firmware update that seems to fix the freezes I was experiencing with the unit, so they decided not to send a new unit. Supposedly prior to the first of the year, they'll issue a firmware update that will fix the gapless problem. I'll revisit it then -- it's actually a really cool, great-sounding unit otherwise.

They insist that they'll have a fix for the gapless issue prior to the end of the year, and a recent communication with HIFIMAN leads me to believe that my review sample may have been defective with regard to the ongoing startup issue...they're sending another unit for evaluation.

That's too bad about the gapless playback. I had been looking at this as a way to get into balanced DAPs, but I enjoy listening to entire albums too much to go in for this at $400.
