(Tw)eek! It’s a Useful Product: The Block Audio C-Lock!
Block audio is new to me, but if websites are worth a thousand words, then this audio manufacturer from the Czech Republic is well worth getting to know. Perhaps someday I'll be writing about one of Block's active components, but today, I'm writing about a new product that doesn't play music.
Recently, Block Audio announced the availability of its self-described "missing link" in audio power cord management, the C-Lock Power Connection Guard (HERE). The beautifully made C-Lock is a clever way to cope with the strain audiophile power cords can place on power receptacles.
I am well aware of this issue. My Triode Wire Labs power cords are heavy, and if a cord is accidentally moved, it can put enough strain to begin pulling out of the wall socket—at least enough that full blade contact is no longer made. To keep the cord caps secure, and the strain off my cheap residential-grade receptacle, I came up with a less-than-elegant way to deal with this issue:
While my do-it-cheap method works better than not having it, the C-Lock Connection Guard does this job with unyielding security. It is a product of usable elegance befitting audiophile power cords that can cost thousands of dollars.
Block Audio manufactures three styles of C-Lock covers. All accomplish the basic task of securing the power cord cap to the receptacle plate via a supporting ring that tightens down on the cord cap. There are a number of C-Lock options, and U.S. pricing (HERE) is based upon materials, design, and whether the C-lock plate is furnished with a simplex or duplex receptacle. The entry-level C-Lock Lite is $49 Plate only ($54 with choice of simplex or duplex receptacle). The C-Lock SE (as shown in this review) is $119 Plate only ($125 choice of simplex or duplex receptacle) , and the ultimate C-Lock SE2, which fits Furutech aftermarket audiophile-grade wiring devices, is $149 Plate only ($349 with Simplex Furutech NCF, or $395 with Duplex Furutech NCF ).
Installation of the C-Lock plate is a breeze unless the receptacle needs to be changed. One plate screw, and done!
The C-Lock SE sample I was sent included a standard (rounded) 20 amp duplex receptacle to replace my "Decora" style (rectangular) receptacle. Therefore, I needed to do a bit of electrical work before the simple installation of the C-Lock plate. You might need to consult a licensed electrician if a wiring device replacement is required. Luckily for me, I was just that in a previous life. Done.
Note: C-Lock Plates are not compatible with Decora receptacles, only standard simplex, and duplex receptacles. C-Lock Lite, and SE plates are not compatible with Furutech receptacles.
The black anodized finish of the SE plate is very nice, and the heavy plastic circular locking ring (which oddly reminds me of a 35 mm camera lens) has an insert that tightens down on the PC cord cap body, holding it remarkably stable. The locking ring assembly is by necessity rather large, allowing for a cord cap the size of the Furutech NCF to be inserted. The ring does impede the upper plug in a duplex receptacle a little. The molded two-prong, and molded three-prong cord caps I tried worked, however it is possible that caps with large bodies may not. Your Results May Vary.
While the C-Lock is perfect for a high-end power cord feeding a power line conditioner, or power distribution unit (including Block Audio's own products). In my case, using the C-Lock necessitated a power cord layout revision. I eventually added a second C-Lock SE plate for added flexibility, and I am very happy with the results!
As you can see, the C-Lock SE does indeed hold my Triode Wire Labs "Obsession NCF" Power Cord securely, without strain on the receptacle, or the Furutech NCF cord cap.
The Block Audio C-Lock Connection Guard is smartly designed, beautifully executed, and yes, a useful tweak for any fine audio system. Whether there are any tangible sonic improvements from using the C-Lock or not, the mechanical stability it provides for high-end power cords makes it a worthy addition to an audiophile listening room.
