Under the leadership of the brilliant Mitch Ko, President and Chief Designer of UIT Products, comes the long awaited PMP Speaker Cables. In both single-wire and bi-wire configurations, pricing is not the same type of truly super-attractive deal of the UIT interconnects—being in the $2500 - $3000 range—but the complexity of the speaker cable, silver modules, and minimum supplied 1.5 meters necessitates a higher cost to manufacture. The PMP Speaker Cables are complex, elegant, built in California to utter perfection, and perform like speaker cables costing 50% more. They are extraordinary in many ways, and blend with other manufacturers interconnects in the front end extremely well, allowing other wire brands to perform to their max.
With a spot-on neutral tonal balance, the PMP Speaker Cables clean up grain, grunge, haze, and all sorts of noises. They retain tonal colors, extreme detail, and prodigious power and slam. They do need 100 hours of playing time to achieve their maximum performance. The UIT speaker cables are well shielded, but sound a bit more open on cable lifters. Flexible and beautiful, the supplied connectors are first rate. I used both bananas and spades in my bi-wire set.
In both my reference systems, I found terrific performance from extreme lows through super highs, with no UIT wire signature to describe. Their level of performance was at or beyond $4000-per-meter speaker cable, and their ability to clean up the sound stage was unique. Both of my systems include tubes, some solid-state gear, various brands of high-end wires, and either diamond or ceramic speaker drivers. Even with this revealing gear, the UIT Speaker cables were an obvious breakthrough design.
Very exciting was the UIT Speaker Cables' ability to maximize other brands of cables. I noticed that Kimber Select, Kubala-Sosna Emotion and Elation!, and Merrill ANAP all reached new levels of definition and clarity in the company of the UITs.
The UIT Interconnects performed well with their UIT speaker cables, though there was less ADDED performance benefit with an all-UIT system. The addition of the UIT Speaker Cables to a system configuration with none or a few UIT Interconnects yielded maximum UIT Speaker Cable benefit and system performance. The UIT Speaker Cables became the icing on the cake in an all UIT wired system.
Once again, the big, big beneficiary of the UIT Speaker Cables is their uncanny see-through sound. Each leg has its own proprietary silver module, eliminating any need for other add-ons, as far as I could determine. Their ability to smooth and clarify without disrupting is astonishing here and throughout the UIT line-up.
Yes, other manufacturer's wires do this sort of thing, but I can count those on one hand that give you these benefits without the subtraction of something. Maybe $35,000 speakers are insufficient, and the 009 Stax headphones are not sufficiently revealing to hear any tonal problems with UIT. However, spend 50% more, or double the UIT Speaker Cables pricing, and another 10-15% more definition is there to be gotten.
Quibbles
Though flexible, I would order 2 meter lengths just for added maneuvering. The supplied locking banana plugs are terrific and I would order those whenever possible for easy setup and best sound (according to the famous Jack Bybee.) There is no absolutely right cable or interconnect for every system, so UIT provides a great 30-day trial policy. Some manufacturers insist you use all of their brand cables only. My experience reveals this to be true in only special, unusual cases, so mix it up my friends. (This is true for mixing power cords, too.)
